Reproductive Technology is Changing the Fertility Journey for Many Prospective Parents
Dr. Tsai Eing-Mei ,President of the Taiwanese Society for Reproductive Medicine ,points out that genetic defects are more common than imagined, with an average of one in three people carrying at least one abnormal gene. These recessive genes often go unnoticed until two carriers form a family, potentially leading to issues.Medical technology continues to advance to prevent hereditary diseases. From early amniocentesis to today's pre-pregnancy carrier screening, prospective parents can understand potential genetic risks before pregnancy.
The team led by Professor Sun Hsiao-fang at Center for Genomic Medicine in National Cheng Kung University has developed a comprehensive screening solution that can detect 221 genes and 247 disease clinical symptoms with just one blood draw, greatly improving testing convenience and accuracy.
Even when both prospective parents are found to be carriers, modern technology offers solutions.
Dr. Pan Hsien-An ,Derector of AN-AN IVF Reproductive Medicine Group , mentions that through IVF technology combined with PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing), doctors can select healthy embryos for implantation, increasing implantation success rates and newborn health. The latest development, non-invasive PGT-A (niPGTA), enables safer testing without requiring embryo biopsy.
AN-AN IVF and Center for Genomic medicine in NCKU have collaborated to develop icONE, the world's first AI-powered embryo prediction system. This innovation has not only won the National Innovation Award&Future Tech Award but has also received FDA certification in the United States, putting Taiwan's reproductive medical technology in the international spotlight.
Through promoting the importance of pre-pregnancy carrier screening and utilizing AI-powered embryo prediction system, we hope to progress toward improving maternal and infant health and achieving high pregnancy rates with single embryo transfer, allowing more families to confidently welcome new life.
